Summary

____________________________
From the #1 bestselling author and creator of the hit Netflix series The Stranger comes a riveting new thriller, starring the new hero Windsor Horne Lockwood III – or Win, as he is known to his (few) friends …
____________________________
Over twenty years ago, heiress Patricia Lockwood was abducted during a robbery of her family's estate, then locked inside an isolated cabin for months。 Patricia escaped, but so did her captors, and the items stolen from her family were never recovered。

Until now。

On New York's Upper West Side, a recluse is found murdered in his penthouse apartment, alongside two objects of note: a stolen Vermeer painting and a leather suitcase bearing the initials WHL3。 For the first time in years, the authorities have a lead not only on Patricia's kidnapping but also on another FBI cold case - with the suitcase and painting both pointing them towards one man。

Windsor Horne Lockwood III - or Win as his few friends call him - doesn't know how his suitcase and his family's stolen painting ended up in this dead man's apartment。 But he's interested - especially when the FBI tell him that the man who kidnapped his cousin was also behind an act of domestic terrorism, and that he may still be at large。

The two cases have baffled the FBI for decades。 But Win has three things the FBI does not:: a personal connection to the case, a large fortune, and his own unique brand of justice 。。。

I loved it。 I relatively recently discovered Harlan Coben, and this was part of my mission to read everything by him。 And his books keep getting adapted into Netflix series, so that makes it even more fun to read the books, then watch the adaptations。 This book is about Win – Windsor Horne Lockwood III to be exact。 He’s rich, like, super duper, private jets, priceless art, rich。 He also has a penchant for violence, so he’s worried when the police ask for his help in a murder investigation。 But h I loved it。 I relatively recently discovered Harlan Coben, and this was part of my mission to read everything by him。 And his books keep getting adapted into Netflix series, so that makes it even more fun to read the books, then watch the adaptations。 This book is about Win – Windsor Horne Lockwood III to be exact。 He’s rich, like, super duper, private jets, priceless art, rich。 He also has a penchant for violence, so he’s worried when the police ask for his help in a murder investigation。 But he doesn’t know anything about this murder, or does he? Because why else would his property be in the dead man’s apartment? Win must figure out the murder before the FBI does, both to keep himself out of trouble and to save his family’s name。 As to be expected, everyone has secrets, but Coben lets you play along to solve the murder。 It was completely immersive。 I read the entire book a day。 I will read anything Harlan Coben writes。 QOTD: Is Harlan Coben a go-to author for you? Wasn't sure if the crazy patrician ass-kicker could support a novel's worth of his story。 He can。 The usual well-plotted twisty thriller that makes me buy Coben's books when they come out in hardback。 It will be interesting to see if this will end up as a series。 Wasn't sure if the crazy patrician ass-kicker could support a novel's worth of his story。 He can。 The usual well-plotted twisty thriller that makes me buy Coben's books when they come out in hardback。 It will be interesting to see if this will end up as a series。 。。。more

This was a very slow drawn out book。 Far too much description kept things from moving along。

Page turner。 You hate Win, you love Win。 Strong plot, interesting development, tied up all plot lines at the end。 Worth the read。

“Can you use your Mr。 Super-Rich Guy persona to get access to this bank robber?”I frown。 “I’ll pretend you didn’t ask。”I like Win - always have and will enjoy reading more of his story。

First book in a new series by Harlan Coben, featuring a secondary character from his Myron Bolitar books。 Coben’s books have been hit or miss for me, this one is a win。 The lead character is a wealthy vigilante, essentially Batman without a cowl, albeit with a sadistic streak。 My only complaint is the sex was gratuitous and had nothing to do with the plot, although it did help set the character。

There is some tough subject matter in this book。 Do not think me a monster, but this was a good read。 I really think the author had a good time writing this one。 A good bit of escapism from our every day lives。 I am looking forward to more novels with this character。 Sassy and arrogant as he is。

Win is a WINNERWhen I saw this book was Win without his pal Myron I didn’t think he could pull off being the leading man。 Boy was I wrong! This book is classic Harlan Cobden weaving a tale you would never anticipate。 The twists of this story make it hard to put down。 Must admit I did miss Myron being in the story but Win mentions him numerous times which I loved。 This is a must read! Best book I have read in a long time。

Not really my cup of tea。 A rich aristocrat who spends his time as dark avenger of the innocent is just a bit of a stretch。 I won’t be recommending this to my fellow readers!

Ugh。。。the main character is beyond pretentious, and more important, not at all believable。 What's worse, the writing is even more pretentious。 The author seems to be screaming: "Forget the story -- look at me! See how clever I am?" in almost every sentence。。。which detracts from whatever the heck the story is。 I did enjoy his books with Myron Bolitar。 But this one, well, I didn't read past the first 30 pages, so maybe it gets better after that。 Ugh。。。the main character is beyond pretentious, and more important, not at all believable。 What's worse, the writing is even more pretentious。 The author seems to be screaming: "Forget the story -- look at me! I feel like i have waited forever for more Win。 I loved this arrogant American aristocrat from the start of the Myron Bolitar days and always wanted to know more of his story。 This book does not disappoint although Win sometimes does。 It gives a little background but mostly is about the man Win is today and the man he is becoming。

Rita Aksamit

This is a new, very interesting character for Coben。 The Title character excercises unorthodox methods for dealing with criminal elements。

Jean Pyzik

Loved this。 Can’t wait for the next book in the series。 Knocked it out if the park!

It’s been a long time since I read one of Coben’s books, but I remembered Win immediately, the super-rich vigilante。 This book is personal, about Win and his family。 It’s a non-stop story and the surprises come at the end。

I was always told by my English teachers that if you are writing something then it has to grab the reader in the first few lines。 This definitely didn’t so I knew instantly that I wouldn’t like this book。 Wasn’t grabbed or intrigued but bored and had it been a library book would have returned it instantly。 Instead carried on for as long as possible before giving up on it。 Sorry but this is definitely not for me but doubtless the author’s fans will devour it with relish! This is a hard one to rate。 Harlan Coben is a great thriller/mystery writer, and I enjoyed all (and I mean all) his Myron and Mickey Bolitar novels。 The problem I have with this book is that while Windsor Lockwood is an excellent supplement to Myron and adds a lot to those novels, I don't feel he can carry an entire novel on his own。 His constantly reminding us of his incredible mental abilities, his vast wealth, his exclusive wardrobe, his cars and jets and helicopters, his sexual prowess, his This is a hard one to rate。 Harlan Coben is a great thriller/mystery writer, and I enjoyed all (and I mean all) his Myron and Mickey Bolitar novels。 The problem I have with this book is that while Windsor Lockwood is an excellent supplement to Myron and adds a lot to those novels, I don't feel he can carry an entire novel on his own。 His constantly reminding us of his incredible mental abilities, his vast wealth, his exclusive wardrobe, his cars and jets and helicopters, his sexual prowess, his amazing martial arts abilities and his ability to incapacitate or kill another person in 150 different ways gets very old very quickly。 I'm going to rate this novel a 3 for these reasons。 The writing and storytelling, in itself, would probably get a 4 or a 5 and might appeal to some fans of this genre, as is demonstrated by the current 4+ rating。 I'd like to see more Mickey and Myron novels with Win back in a supporting role。 。。。more

Good plot, historical crime leading to subsequent crime leading to present crime。 Historical crime taking place in 60s activism, my favorite。 Great twist(s) at the end。5 stars reduced to 4 because first, Win is only occasionally likable; second, the sex app kind of made me roll my eyes at aging authors and their sex fantasies; and third, the regular references to Myron seemed to serve no purpose。

Almost a decade has passed since I last read a book by Harlan Coben。 I’m not sure why, since I remember thoroughly enjoying every story of his I’ve read。 More than anything, I was a huge Myron Bolitar fan (and I’m kinda horrified to discover that I never read the last book in that series)。 What’s more, Myron’s sidekick, Winston Horne Lockwood III, has always intrigued me。 So, when I spotted a book titled Win on the library’s shelves and I realised who the title referred to, I brought it home ins Almost a decade has passed since I last read a book by Harlan Coben。 I’m not sure why, since I remember thoroughly enjoying every story of his I’ve read。 More than anything, I was a huge Myron Bolitar fan (and I’m kinda horrified to discover that I never read the last book in that series)。 What’s more, Myron’s sidekick, Winston Horne Lockwood III, has always intrigued me。 So, when I spotted a book titled Win on the library’s shelves and I realised who the title referred to, I brought it home instantly。I didn’t regret that decision for even a moment。 Win has been the first book in far too long that I read in less than twenty-four hours。 I’m not going to say anything about the story itself since the blurb tells you everything you need to know; anything more would mean spoilers。 Suffice to say that this is one action-packed, often violent, frequently funny, and occasionally surprisingly touching story。While I thoroughly enjoyed the break-neck speed at which events unfold, my favourite aspect of this book was how it allowed me to get to know Win better。 In my (rather vague) memories he was a not particularly social, violent, and no-bullshit sorta guy who also happened to be filthy rich and happy to use his wealth to achieve what he perceived as justice。 My memories weren’t wrong。 They weren’t entirely right either。 While he was certainly as entertaining a character as I recalled, Win had far more dimensions and depth to his personality than I remembered from the earlier Myron Bolitar stories。Win’s musings often hold uncomfortable truths。 Uncomfortable for the reader that is, Win himself is very comfortable with these thoughts most of the time。 He’s very self-aware and makes no excuses for what some might consider his darker side。 And I guess that’s part of his (secret) charm。 Because he doesn’t try to make himself (look) better than he is, I’m inclined to look for the good in him。 Win may claim that his actions stem from self-interest, but if you read between his words and pay attention it’s hard not to recognise that while his methods may be brutal, his reason for taking action are often at the very least understandable。I don’t need to tell you that Harlan Coben is a master and in a class of his own when it comes to thrillers。 Win confirmed that status with a well-plotted mystery, a fast-paced story, fascinating characters, and more than enough twists and turns to keep me guessing。I’m looking forward to more Windsor Horne Lockwood III books and will make sure to get my hands on that last Myron Bolitar title (Home) in the not too distant future。 。。。more

Great readI couldn’t put it down。 I enjoy Harlan Cohen’s writing。 Though I enjoyed Win without Myron, I missed their interaction。 I’m looking forward to the second in this series。

His first failure!! Too much emphasis on what an arrogant, egotistical, chauvinistic ass,the main character Win is。 He should have stayed Myron Bolitars friend!

Carolyn Russett

a bit implausible and violent, yet a decent read and some good twist and turns

3。5 rounded up。 I enjoyed learning more about Win and his background。 I was familiar with the character from the Myron Bolitar series, and this gave me a better picture of him。 Hopefully it is a spinoff series, as I would definitely read the next one!
